Operation Market Garden Operation
Market Garden was the Allied attempt to take control of series of
bridges over the main rivers of the German occupied Holland. Airborne
units were to be backed up by an armoured advance which if successful
would secure the Allies crossing points over the Rhine, the last major
natural barrier on the advance to Germany.
After the initial successful capture of the Waal Bridge at Nijmegen, the
final Rhine bridge at Arnhem was never taken. Of the 35,000 Allied
soldiers who took part, around 17,000 were killed or wounded and the
Rhine remained a barrier until it was eventually crossed in March 1945.
D-Day Landings in Normandy The 6th
June 1944 saw the largest seaborne invasion in history when Allied force
crossed the English channel to the Normandy beaches which were
code-named Sword, Juno, Gold, Utah and Omaha. Soldiers landed in
Normandy by parachute, glider or by landing craft on the beaches.
British forces landed at Sword and Gold beaches, Canadians at Juno beach
while the Americans landed at Utah and Omaha beaches. Paratroopers and
glider troops were landed behind enemy lines to capture key positions
such as bridges while the French Resistance were involved in disrupting
German communications and transport routes.
Dunkirk and Fortress Europe The
evacuations of Dunkirk saw over 300,000 British and Allied forces
returned to Britain after being surrounded by the advancing Nazis. Once
established, the Nazis started to fortify the north European coast in an
attempt to turn it into Fortress Europe. As well as defensive positions,
you will also visit launch sites from the V1 flying bombs and the V2
rocket complex at Eperlecques.
