Other Campaigns
Waterloo is seen by many as one of the greatest battles of all time. It was a tightly contested battle by 2 armies led by 2 brilliant commanders; Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington. The date was 18th June 1815 it was to be the last battle Napoleon fought. In the end, Napoleon was beaten by Wellington’s tactics, the weather and the arrival of the Prussians late in the day to reinforce Wellington. The casualties were high on both sides. 25,000 of Napoleons 73,000 men were killed or wounded while Wellington suffered 22,000 killed or wounded from his 67,000 men. By 18:00, 48,000 of the Prussians had engaged the French. The 3 night escorted coach trip will provide a gripping account of the battle. Today’s battlefield is very different to what it was in 1815. In 1820, the Dutch King, William I, ordered a giant monument on the spot where his son had been wounded. A giant mound (the Lion Mound) was built using 300,000 cubic metres of earth from other parts of the battlefield, including Wellington’s sunken road. When Wellington visited the battlefield years later, he is said to have complained, “they’ve spoiled my battlefield”. We have just 4 departure dates in 2008 for this 3 night tour with prices starting at £219 per person.
