The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is a huge imposing
structure and was built to commemorate the 72,090 missing British and
Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Battle of the Somme and have
no known grave. 600 graves lie in the shadow of the memorial to British,
Commonwealth and French soldiers. Each year on 1st July and 11th
November, a major ceremony is held at the memorial.
